Every evening, I start humming “It’s been a hard day’s night”. Usually somewhere around 10 pm. I came up to my PC – and happily switch it on, knowing that somewhere on the globe some other person seeking for a company is doing the same.
I know we will find each other finally –one thousand bites away, since one thousand pixels.
He’ll be smart and strong, and will make me happy…
Is the picture described familiar to you?

I’m in search. Yes, it’s not the first day of my challenge. It’s even not the first week. And, actually, it’s not the first year….

But I still believe that the hope springs eternal in the human breast. I am gaining experience. I am becoming popular on some chats. And – I’ve met a lot of new friends.

During all this period I’ve been thinking a lot about the nature of virtual relations, about technical and moral aspects of online dating services and so on.

And just a few words before I start. Webcams are really and absolutely irreplaceable. And my story is mainly about them. You’ll understand me, when I finish.

1) Web cams help you to be more sincere. When you’re online – you can’t hide behind cool smiles and avatars – anybody will see you as is. And it helps you to get rid of uncalled-for shyness. A live cam says: You are still at home, in the safe embrace of your den. And still – you are talking to some strangers on the other side of the planet. Just a simple acknowledgement of this fact is able to strength your self-confidence greatly. Believe me, I know

2) Webcams help you to be more organized and tidy. I used to spend weekends in my PJ with my hair in a total disaster. Nut now I’m always ready for a talk with my destiny . I do care about the first impression about me, and I want it to be as perfect as possible. A gorgeous lady in a perfectly cozy room. It attracts people much more than dirty slattern in a terrible mess. Don’t ask me why I’m so sure about it. ;)

3) Webcam chats help you to understand if you are really ready for something more than email. It’s much easier to do it, when you can look into your vis-à-vis eyes. You can appraise the situation, you can control it. When you have a control – you have a power. Sounds like a psychoanalyst slogan, but… It really helps.

4) Webcams help you to be well-versed in hi-fi hardware and software. All this protocols, headsets, ports and plug-ins…. When you are really about it – I mean online dating now – you are taking care about being modern girl – so you are studying, you are in a constant progress and self-development. It’s good for you, it’s good for your PC. Who knows, may be there is a computer geek sleeping in the depth of your soul?

5) Webcams help you to be sure about your appearance. You are not forced to use this idiotic descriptions of yourself: Long legs and blue eyes, bla-bla-bla… I personally consider the whole idea of this “about yourself” fields to be stupid and humiliating. Are you a piece of tenderloin or what? Web cameras help –just post a link. And a picture of you taken by web cam – fast, easy and always up-to-date. Before I purchased my first web camera I used to write something like “It’s the picture of mine. But the hair is red now and it’s longer and I am very swarthy now because I’d got drowsy in a solarium last weekend”.

6) Free webcams are your protection – when you are making decision “to date or not to date online”. Sometimes women aware of any kind of intimate relations, especially after a hard break-down, divorce or unfortunate attempt of dating offline. Thereby webcams step in as a real life buoy – they let you to start close relations but to keep the distance between you and your “chosen one” under hard control. They can protect you both mentally and physically – against stupid jokes of teens on the peek of their puberty age, against sexual perverts and maniacs, freaks and insane people. If you are looking for a remote control of your personal life – the only possible answer is a webcam. A perfect answer.

7) Live webcams make you polite. We all know how painful could the words be. It’s so easy to print “@#$% you” in a chat room. It’s much harder to SAY it – face to face. Both ways – you are not under risk of being humiliated or insulted anymore, and vice versa – webcams make you think about what you say. And… may be… suppose… they will inspire you to work hard on your accent?

8) Free live web cams are your eyes. The same way you are taking care about the look of your face and room – your vis-à-vis demonstrates not only the true level of his accuracy but his attitude to you – does he care about what you will think about the socks in a pizza box on his table? When you are important to somebody, when he is trying to attract you – he WILL clean up a mess. And shave, and put a clean and tidy T-shirt on.

9) Live webcam chats let you to play roles. You can be a strip-girl or a bluestocking, a strict teacher or a hippie girl. Any role you always dreamed about is now in your hand. I am not about jeopardizing people, no. You should never start something serious based on a lie – but we are looking not only for a fiancé, aren’t we? May be some Broadway producer will catch sight of you, may be you’ll find an amateur theatre or a dance club? And – when you are done with it – just switch a camera of. “Click”.

10) Webcam sites are giving you wings. Date in Paris? Or, may be a short trip to Tokyo? It’s so simple – just find a person from a region you are interested in, and ask him or her to take his laptop out. You can fly around the globe like a butterfly – fast, free of limits and free of charge LOL. And if you will offer the same good turn – you will gain more friends.

11) Live web cams keep you in touch with the world. You’re in a business trip? Click. You are spending Thanksgiving with your Grandma in Utah? But you are still really close to your online friends – on the distance of one mouse-click. You will never loose each other because of a moving to the other state or postmen strike. Google and live web cams – they will save the world someday. That’s for sure.

12) Live cams are making your life brighter. All the benefits described above have one in common. Your dull and irksome life becomes lush, bright, fresh and exuberant; your life is finally in full swing.

The possibilities you are gaining from live webcam dating or friend-search are boundless. You will discover more and more ‘pluses’ on your way. For me video chats are integral part of my life, of my perception of the world, of my happiness. They are my lighthouse in the night and my means to support a friend.

I am looking for my promised. I am gaining friends and experience on the way. I am video-chatting. I am webcam maniac – and totally happy with it. And after I am turning my PC off, I came to bed, kneel and pray:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man who’s not a creep.

One who’s handsome, smart and strong,
Who’s not afraid to admit when he is wrong.

One who thinks before he speaks.
When he promises to call, he doesn’t wait six weeks.

I pray that he is gainfully employed,
Won’t lose his cool when he’s annoyed.

Pulls out my chair and opens my door,
Massages my back and begs to do more.

Oh send me a man who will make love to my mind.
Know what to say when I ask “How fat is my behind?”

One who’ll make love till my body’s a’ itchin’
He brings ME a sandwich too, when he goes to the kitchen.

I pray that this man will love me to no end,
And never compare me to my best friend.

Thank you in advance and now I’ll just wait,
For I know you will send him before it’s too late.

Have a nice webcam evening. Good night.

Employee Training Automated: The Incremental Leaps and Bounds that Training Software Provides for Li

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 10:12 am

by Marci
For life science and high tech companies employee training is obviously essential. Employee training is also regulated by the FDA, ISO and additional regulatory agencies or organizations. For life science and high tech professionals employee training must be a priority but like many quality related processes manages to fall through the crack, especially during periods of critical design, planning or peak production when lack of employee training can often be the result of nonconformance, deviations, marketing delays and product recalls.

Real REALITY for Life Science and High Tech Companies

The reality for life science and high tech companies is that most companies, especially large enterprises find it difficult or virtually impossible to consistently maintain initial, annual, semi-annual, remedial and/or follow-up employee training sessions. For especial manufacturing companies the process can become particularly tedious when hundreds of employees work varying shifts and have a multitude of various start dates and an array of needs for a variety of training options.

Automating Employee Training

Life science and high tech companies NEED to become aware of the automated employee training solutions that are available for their specific needs. Life science and high tech companies also need to be aware of the many benefits that a high quality training solution can provide.

Some of these benefits are listed as follows:

Tracking- Since productive employee training procedures require a host of forms or documentation to plan, coordinate, assign, officiate, escalate and follow-up on effective training processes, life science and high tech companies should find an employee training solution that tracks training forms and links essential training information. The solution should also facilitate the quick location and analysis of training data for accelerate post-training actions and simplified internal and external audit processes.

Connections- The process of employee training is NOT a lone entity. Employee training orders are often the direct or indirect result of deviations identification, nonconformance identification, customer complaints information, CAPA investigations or change control results and should be connected to solutions that will automatically trigger training assignments when the data deems it necessary to do so. For example, life science and high tech companies should be actively searching for an employee training solution that is integrated with deviations, nonconformance, customer complaints, CAPA and change control software. These solutions (or solution) should directly or indirectly trigger (automatically) training tasks for dozens or even hundreds of employees.

Accountability- Ideally, every life science or high tech employee would take part in and be accountable for his or her own training responsibilities. The “ideal” training scenario is rarely the realistic result however. Most training responsibilities fall directly into the laps of one or two overworked training supervisors. With an employee training software solution however, employees can be automatically notified via email of training tasks which are tracked (and escalated if they are not completed on or near the training deadline) from start to finish. These features relocate responsibility and accountability into the hands of the employee himself (or herself) and ideally require him or her to sign off from each respective training task. A field for employee comments is also valuable since the training supervisor will be able to see and seek to understand the especial training concerns of each individual employee.

Configurable- A configurable solution is the ONLY solution for life science and high tech companies. After all, some companies have a multitude of employees while others have but a few. Some companies require quarterly training or periodic product related trainings while other companies require only annual education. Some companies may not need to integrate the solution with a representative solution for every other quality management process. For this reason the configurability of a product is of the utmost importance.

Conclusion
For life science and high tech companies with a large number of employees automated employee training solutions are the most efficient way to garner time and invaluable ROI.

Great Plains Dynamics GP Installation FAQ

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 9:12 am

by Andrew A Karasev
In order to be prepared to install on your own or select Great Plains implementation consultant, you should be familiar with GP database platform and technology. In early XXI Century, Great Plains Software and respectively Great Plains eEnterprise and Dynamics ERP was acquired by Microsoft. Microsoft formed Microsoft Great Plains Business Solutions with head office in Fargo, ND, later on renamed into Microsoft Business Solutions, and finally in September 2005 into Microsoft Dynamics subdivision. Since the time of Microsoft acquisition, Great Plains was on the way of phasing out non-Microsoft DB platforms, such as Pervasive SQL 2000 (former Btrieve) and Ctree/Faircom — final version supporting these non-Microsoft databases was Microsoft Great Plains Professional and Standard 7.5. For you this means that you should be very comfortable in supporting and troubleshooting Microsoft SQL Server (2005 or 2000) in your organization, as GP is available exclusively on MS SQL Server. Let’s come down to the details bullets:

1. Microsoft Dexterity IDE and scripting language of GP. Former Great Plains Dexterity, currently Microsoft Dynamics GP Dex is the hearth of GP development and scripting. Dex traces are now hidden to certain extent, however you could see it in DEX_ROW_ID column in each table, Dynamics.dic, Dex.ini and Dynamics.exe architectures

2. GP Utilities. When you finish files copy on your workstation or the MS Windows Server, installation process launches Dex Utilities to begin Dynamics database loading. Dex Utils create the database itself, tables, atomic stored procedures, views, other DB components, then they load eConnect encrypted stored procedures. Great Plains has modular structure, and historically vanilla installation of GP includes multiple modules, normally 12 for version 10.0

3. Accounts structure. Here you need to understand that GP requires you to decide on how many segments and maximum account length of your GL accounts. This decision should be communicated to Great Plains Utilities in the Dynamics DB installation time. If you plan to familiarize yourself with GP (if you are installing if from MSDN evaluation DC, foe example), we recommend you to have 3 segments with the following lengths: 3, 4, 2 respectively

4. Review the installation. We recommend you to review Dynamics.set file and see which modules are really installed, you should not install additional modules, if you do not have them in your ERP set, examples could be Manufacturing, Project Accounting, etc. If you are just evaluating GP you can disregard this recommendation, however in production MRP environment, you should install only the modules you need, as all the other modules will try to validate themselves and force you to do their setup

5. Old version update. If you need GP upgrade, then if you are on archaic version, where your DB is not MS SQL Server, then you will need to undergo migration process — migration tool does this job. Migration tool uses link to Pervasive SQL or Ctree and ODBC connection to Microsoft SQL Server to transfer your GP tables. If you are on MS SQL Server, then you need to check with your Microsoft Business Solution VAR on the upgrade path, especially if you are two or more versions behind. Current version is 10.0 and in order to upgrade from version 8.0 or 9.0 you must apply GP 10.0 Service Pack 1 or the newer as it will be available

6. Installation in Citrix environment. In terminal server you more likely would like to suppress Microsoft Office stack of products integration, including Microsoft Outlook. Please review table SY08100 in Dynamics database.

7. Great Plains Customization Upgrade. Here you will need professional Dexterity programmer help in reviewing your alternative business logic forms and scripts and performing the upgrade job

8. Great Plains Integration upgrade. Here you should find out which integrating tool you deploy. In the case of Integration Manager or IM, you should now that in versions 9.0 and 10.0 you have now eConnect IM connectors for such popular integration destinations, as SOP transactions, POP transactions, customers, shipping methods, etc. In order to get the performance advantages of new eConnect connectors you will have to reassemble IM integrations. eConnect doesn’t require GP workstation be running behind the scenes, however each integration targets specific GP company, which is not the case for old OLE integrations

9. Additional Considerations. These might be self apparent, however we saw the problems related to them. So, please be sure that you have Server admin right if you are installing server side and user workstation admin rights if you are installing user part

10. Vista User Workstation installation. Please, review latest technical articles for Vista and Microsoft Dynamics GP, as at this time, January 2008 Vista has certain patches and assumptions, when you install Great Plains there

AntiSpywareBot : Great Tool to Increase PC Performance

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 9:12 am

by MySafePC.net
Is your PC slow? Mine was too. Many people believe it is viruses which slow down your computer. While this may be correct, spyware is the leading cause of slow PC performance. Most antivirus programs do not detect spyware and more than likely, you have spyware infections hidden inside your computer. CNN says, “There is a 90% chance that your PC is infected with spyware.” Wired News agrees saying that, “Spyware is the biggest threat to personal computing.” In this article you will learn about spyware, how it effects your computer, and what program I personally use to remove these annoying infections.

What Is Spyware?

Spyware is a program that performs malicious activity on your computer without your knowledge. This includes annoying pop-ups even if you’re not on the internet, tracking cookies that follow you everywhere you go online, keyloggers that record your passwords, and programs that leave your PC wide open for future attacks. These are all the things that annoy the heck out of you, and slow your computer down.

After understanding spyware, I went to download.com and checked out some of their free antispyware programs including ad-aware and spybot. I ran these programs and they didn’t seem to be very effective so I concluded that “you get what you pay for” when it comes to free antispyware programs.

How Do I Remove Spyware?

I personally use, and highly recommend, AntiSpywareBot. When I first downloaded the program it found 431 infections. Including tracking cookies, trojans, and some bad registry keys. I thought, “Wow this program is the real deal. Finally something that works!” So, I registered to remove the issues for $20 and it’s like my computer had an epiphany. It’s running almost as fast as when I bought it and the software includes free updates for a year, the ability to control programs during startup, and scheduled scans. I would highly recommend running a free scan of your PC because it will save you a lot of headaches.

Best Regards,
Matt

5 Tips for Clinical Laboratory Directors and Their Respective Quality Systems

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 8:12 am

by Marci
A clinical quality system under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) relies heavily on the influence of laboratory directors. In fact, laboratory directors are ultimately and personally responsible for many aspects of a clinical laboratory’s quality system. This article offers tips for clinical laboratory directors and their respective quality systems:

Tip #1: Continued CLIA Education

A clinical director has primary and at times absolute responsibility for quality systems associated with moderately complex, highly complex or moderately and highly complex laboratory environments. He or she also has primary responsibility for gaining and maintaining continued compliance with CLIA regulations which often acts as a mold for clinical laboratory quality systems. To ensure that a clinical laboratory quality system remains compliant with the “CLIA mold” laboratory directors should remain thoroughly educated regarding CLIA regulations. Related courses are available for both types of directors and should be taken from time to time for educative purposes.

Refer to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ website for more information.

Tip #2: Take Employee Training Seriously

Under the CLIA regulations, documentation (i.e. policies and procedures) outlining written monitoring methods for determining employee competency and events or situations which may require further training and education is the responsibility of a clinical laboratory director. Training, though often complex, (especially in an environment with continuous needs for continued education) should be thoroughly documented and reviewed for information that could prevent inappropriate handling of laboratory testing. Although, careful and continuous training may mean more money upfront, in the long run, additional training pays off.

Web-based training solutions are also valuable tools as they electronically streamline the training process, make training reports and escalations easy to automate. A web-based training solution may potentially be integrated with other quality related solutions such as document control, deviations identification, change control and CAPA software options.

Tip #3: Take Customer Complaints Management Seriously

For a clinical laboratory quality system, customer complaints can provide a foundation for powerful change. In fact, CLIA regulations mandate that all customer complaints received by a clinical laboratory must be systematically recorded and effectively addressed when necessary. For clinical laboratory directors integrated software solutions can help to streamline and effectively automated the customer complaints process. For instance, a certain type of customer complaint iterated repeatedly may result in a CAPA investigation, which in turn becomes a change control order which in turn results in a series of training tasks. Laboratory directors should look for document control, customer complaints management, CAPA, change control and training solutions that can be easily implemented and integrated for best quality system results. Such a system can save laboratory directors and employees hundreds (if not thousands) of annual hours.

Tip #4: Delegate Applicable Responsibilities

Under CLIA regulations, clinical laboratory directors must accept responsibility for a variety of directive tasks associated with the management of a clinical laboratory quality system. However, some responsibilities may be delegated from time to time and should be delegated to ease the directive load. Some of the tasks that may be delegated to a clinical consultant should be written prior to delegation and are listed as follows:

• Performance of tests, AND
• Interpretation of test results

Delegation may also result in tasks assigned to a technical supervisor (over high complexity duties) or a technical consultant (over moderate complexity duties) consultant. Some of these tasks are listed as follows:

• Selection of Methodology for Testing
• Laboratory Enrollment in a PT (proficiency testing) program that is approved by the CMS, AND
• Other duties associated with PT assignments, samples or results

Tip #5: Consider a Coordinated Quality System

Many laboratory directors consider their quality systems to be coordinated but there are often extensive gaps during the transfer of information from one quality procedure to another (i.e. from customer complaints to a CAPA investigation) and laboratory documentation when controlled manually (i.e. paper-based) often results in lost, delayed, incomplete or difficult-to-find laboratory documentation slowing the entire quality system. Laboratory directors should consider automating document control and quality related processes for increased coordination and connection between quality processes, as well as decreased delays for product-to-market and testing operations.

Data Loss From PCs to Suit Pockets

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 8:12 am

by Ontrack Data Recovery
Data is everywhere. No longer confined to desktop computers, data is always with us — at the gym in the form of an iPod®, in the car via your cell phone, and of course surrounding you at work — notebooks, desktops, servers, etc. With the increased portability of data comes the increased risk for data to be lost, misplaced, damaged or destroyed.

An Ontrack Data Recovery survey conducted among 400 professionals worldwide revealed that 65% of professionals own at least one USB stick. The compact size leads many people to store their sticks incorrectly — in suit pockets or in bags — leaving valuable confidential data at risk.

To help protect mobile devices from data loss, Ontrack Data Recovery has put together some simple preventative steps that will help create good habits for the use of USB sticks and hopefully prevent any data disasters.

1. Minimize misplacement Try to prevent ‘wandering’ USB sticks. The device is easily lost when you don’t exactly know where it is kept. A dedicated USB spot prevents loss of data from a portable storage device.

2. Carry with care — Make sure your USB is stored safely when traveling to minimize the risk of losing data.

3. No backups, please — A USB stick is too vulnerable to store precious information. These sticks should therefore never be used as a backup device.

4. Put a lid on it — if not in use ensure that the connector of your USB is protected. By using the protective cap, provided with any USB stick, a possible data disaster can be averted

5. Unplug before you leave — Before you embark on a journey that requires a laptop and a USB stick, make sure the devices are separated. This way, both the laptop and the USB stick will run less risk of damage

With the use of mobile storage devices becoming more common, it is crucial that people understand there are options available if their data disappears.

Ontrack Data Recovery™, www.ontrackdatarecovery.com, is the largest, most experienced and technologically advanced provider of data recovery products and services worldwide. Ontrack is able to recover lost or corrupted data from all operating systems and types of storage devices through its do-it-yourself, remote and in-lab capabilities, using its hundreds of proprietary tools and techniques.

Monday 31 December 2007 @ 2:12 am

by Daryl Moore
If you are experiencing slow computer problems, computer internet slow downs, or simply need to stop computer crashes, you most likely have the need to fix Windows registry errors.

Before tossing out your existing computer or taking your PC to an expensive repair shop to fix registry problems, you may want to read this article. There are inexpensive options to repair your problems in 10 minutes or less.

Step One: Create a List of all Symptoms and Errors Experienced

You may have already pinpointed your problems to a specific registry error. If this is the case you can skip this step. If you haven’t yet determined 100 percent that you are having Windows registry errors, continue reading.

Start by taking note of what larger symptoms you are experiencing. Also list any error messages that have displayed on your PC (like DLL, shut down or start up, or blue screens).

Below are symptoms common to Windows registry errors:

• Speed of PC is extremely slow
• Virus and spyware software can’t detect or fix the problems
• Consistent freezes, unexpected crashes, and slow performance
• Start up (boot) process isn’t smooth and shut downs are abnormal
• Rebooting the computer is becoming a common practice
• Error messages are pinpointing a Windows registry problem
• Inability to properly add and remove software on computer

Employee Intellectual Property Theft Destroys Businesses

Sunday 30 December 2007 @ 5:12 pm

by C. F. Benninghoff
In business one of the top priorities is internal security. Through computer use, corporate information can easily be compromised if an organization does not have a proper spy software system in place. By tracking employee activity, a well-developed spy software system allows administrators to have control over all computer activity while preserving the privacy of all internal data.

SONAR is a revolutionary security spy software product that helps administrators maintain the integrity of their company by protecting critical information and enforcing internal policies to all network users. This advanced spy software creates a coherent system that functions at the desktop level.

SONAR’s spy software monitors all online activity through a central server that governs assets on or off the company network, including outside contractors and traveling sales people. With SONAR, security solutions are configured in minutes making this spy software one of the most user-friendly on the market. With SONAR, it is unnecessary to have other solutions installed, making it an idea all-in-one security program.

SONAR’s advanced spy software system captures all keystrokes that have been typed into a computer. This spy software monitors and filters all Internet use, whether it is on your network or off, including when you are not online. With this efficient and thorough software, all web mail and instant messages are quickly disseminated. SONAR takes screenshots of all computer activity, past and present, reads all employee communications, blocks software applications on a scheduled basis, screens all email attachments for sensitive material, and tracks all file use.

SONAR allows compromising material to be blocked and will remotely destroy or locate any recovered data when appropriate. With SONAR’s advanced filtering capabilities you can block websites, filter content, create a white-list of websites allowed, whereby traffic is directed to these sites only, and limit application of use according to your specifications.

In addition, SONAR offers spy software functions as an ultimate surveillance tool, providing proof for investigations that may be conducted as a result of inside company fraud.

In a recent survey it was found that 78% of IT related companies have suffered inside security breaches, costing the institutions a fortune in losses. With employees and contractors having free access to connectivity, no wonder businesses are becoming more vulnerable every day. But internal fraud is something preventable. With SONAR spy software the technology is analyzed internally, allowing the risk of security breaches to be nipped in the bud.

Often precious time on the job is wasted by unnecessary web surfing. More than 2/3 of Internet users have confessed in interviews that they have wasted sometimes more than 30% of their job time in non-work-related Internet surfing, whether browsing shopping sites, porn sites, or hobby-related sites. With SONAR spy software this activity is not only monitored but can also be instantly curtailed.

SONAR spy software has the unique ability to identify, track, and control data output, providing a specific protocol for what can be done and what cannot be done with company material. This application is easily configured in minutes versus the days or weeks that other spy software systems often require.

Any application can also be deployed at the discretion of company administrators in a matter of minutes making SONAR one of the most pliable, efficient, and thorough spy software programs on the market today.

Computer theft has also become a commonplace occurrence in the business world. Losing even one computer can compromise the entire security of an organization. SONAR offers a Location and Recovery module that helps to locate a stolen computer, identify what has been done with data, and destroy compromising material before it has ended up in the wrong hands.

You can find out more about Awareness Technologies SONAR Spy Software by visiting its website.

What is .NET?
.NET is a new Internet and web based technology by Microsoft Inc, which deliver software as Web Services. This new framework works for web based applications that work on server centric computing model. The features of .NET enable programmers to build, develop, and manage complete web solutions that are also secured.

Mainly in .Net development and programming, languages including VB.Net, ASP.Net and C# with SQL Server database are used. This unique combination helps in delivering required information and data dynamically to end users.

Visual Studio.NET is a common development environment for the new .NET Framework. Within this framework, we develop applications with web pages, code modules, controls, and other services under a single IIS. This technology provides us with an environment to easily build dynamic and database driven web based applications and solutions.

by Ontrack Data Recovery
Resulting from a global Kroll Ontrack expert poll, this year’s list of data disasters is even more incredible when you consider that in every case cited, the company successfully recovered the data.

Chances are good that Ontrack can successfully recover critical data regardless of how it was lost in the first place.

The Ontrack Data Recovery 2007 Top Ten List of Data Disasters and Remarkable Recoveries

10. All washed up - This year, a woman called the engineers at Kroll Ontrack complaining she had “washed all her data away.” Her USB stick had been through a cycle in her washing machine and unsurprisingly she couldn’t retrieve any data from it.

9. Doting Dad - Rushing home from work to feed his baby daughter, an over-enthusiastic father forgot about the USB stick in his top pocket. As he lent over the high-chair, the device fell in a dish of sticky apple puree

8. Taking the bait - A fisherman thought that he would take his laptop out on his rowing boat to play a few games while waiting for a bite. As he stood up, both he and the laptop went overboard, taking all his data to the bottom of the lake.

7. Panicked photographer - A wedding photographer faced the potential wrath of a new bride when he discovered he had overwritten her photos with those from another event. Two days before the couple returned from their honeymoon, he called Kroll Ontrack for help. The bride was none the wiser.

6. Acid trip - A scientist spilled acid on an external hard drive during an experiment. Thinking all the data had been burned, he called in the experts who were able to successfully recover the data on the drive.

5. Business brawl - In the heat of an argument in Australia, a businessman threw a USB stick at his partner. Containing valuable company plans, the stick ended up in several pieces on the floor. Luckily, both the plans and the business relationship were salvaged.

4. Indiscriminate inferno - Recently, a fire destroyed the majority of the contents of an office, only leaving a few CDs. The sticking point was they had melted to the inside of their cases — a unique job for the engineers.

3. Quest for a quiet life - A British scientist was fed up with his hard drive squeaking, so he drilled a hole through the casing and poured oil into the mechanics. The squeaking stopped, and so did the hard drive.

2. Parachute mishap - In an effort to test the functionality of a parachute, a camera (acting as the cargo) was dropped from a plane. Unfortunately, the parachute failed its test and the fragile cargo shattered into several pieces. With the help of Kroll Ontrack, the camera’s memory stick was reassembled and the video of the parachute’s demise was recovered.

And finally, the number one most remarkable data disaster of 2007…

1. Ant invasion - Discovering ants had taken up residence in his external hard drive, a photographer in Thailand took the cover off and sprayed the interior with insect repellent. The ants didn’t make it and until Kroll Ontrack’s engineers got their hands on it, it looked like the data wasn’t going to either.
