The average computer user spends four or more hours per day in front of their computer. And while we advocate buying computers with a parsimonious budget, the one place you do not skimp is on your peripherals. These are how you interact with your machine.

The most important peripheral for your computer is the monitor. If you’re going to buy anything at all that’s high ticket on your machine, make it the monitor. Fortunately, the same driving factors that are making HDTVs desirable consumer items are also driving the cost of LCD monitors through the floor and beyond. 1920×1200 WXGA monitors that sold for $600 a year ago are now found for $180, and less capable LCD monitors, down to 1280×1024, can be had for under $100. (It wasn’t more than a year ago that 1280×1024 was considered “graphics professional” grade. The changes in LCD monitor prices have been staggering.)

Most modern video cards have dual outputs, and Windows XP and Vista natively handle multiple monitors. If you have an old monitor, and a new computer, consider buying a new monitor and running them both. Do make sure that you have the appropriate cables. DVI output is better than VGA.

After your monitor, you’re going to be spending a lot of time typing. The bane of all typists everywhere is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Be proactive about preventing it. Get an ergonomic keyboard; the ones from Microsoft (the Microsoft Natural line in particular) are strongly recommended. Be warned — you will have to learn out to touch type, but the reduction in pain is well worth it.
