The Fence
O.K., so you’ve been sitting on a fence for a few years on whether or not you should take what computer skills you already possess and better them so you can start a career in the IT sphere of the working world. One question, why are you sitting atop a fence in the first place? Isn’t your bum a bit, sore? It’s a wise decision to hop off and over that fence to put your feet on stable ground where you can foster IT know-how through training courses that will prop you up in a sturdy position to spur growth.
Yet, this growth I speak of can’t start until you’ve hopped off the fence and are willing to get your hands dirty. Assuming you’re still sitting up there, keeping hesitancy and uncertainty under your rump, the following information will attempt to level with your current stagnant state, but also, and hopefully, entice you down.
Papers Speak Louder Than Words
So, you tell yourself and your prospective employer that you know your stuff, all the ins, outs, ups and downs of a specific technical task. That’s fine and dandy, but, despite you not minding hearing your proclamation, your interviewee does. From a prospective employer’s position, they want validity in the form of paper, in other words, a certification. Without this confirmation, you’re wasting their time and yours.
By confirmation, it’s implying to your interviewee that you are competent in whatever is it you’re applying for. Proficiency is preferred by potential employers in all cases, 10 times out of 10.
Stop selling yourself or your skills short. Despite self-gained expertise, without a capstone in the form of a documented certification, you are doing nothing with lots of potential something, your skills.
Finding Time
If making time to sign up for courses, study and actually go to training courses is a problem, it really shouldn’t be. Firstly, signing up and enrolling for courses takes little to no effort. Resources are available on the Web and at all colleges and universities. Just check them out. Secondly, studying can be done anywhere, even from home; as it is, studying for IT exams involves actual doing, tactile operations. So, ’studying,’ in essence, is really just you technically manipulating, something you already do at your own leisure, and probably even enjoy.
And lastly, going to courses isn’t all that time consuming, really. Gear your schedule around courses that are slotted for working individuals which typically take place at night. Or, an even better option is to refer to websites for training and certification completion. In today’s technological day and age, why not avoid going to an actual classroom? Bring the classroom to you instead, anywhere and at any time.
Confusion In Direction
Let’s say you’re perched up there like a perplexed pigeon because of uncertainty in which IT direction you’d like to pursue. If you’re uncertain of what you’d like to do work wise for an IT job, there are solutions. Mainly, resolution is found through research. But, you have to do this yourself, so take the initiative.
Due to the expansiveness that is the IT domain, there are thousands of IT certifications to choose from. Yet, it’s simple to narrow down your options. Mull through selections according to what your expertise is fixed on and based off current career goals, or desires. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to hone in on a few prime choices instead a few hundred options.
So, what are you waiting for, the fence to fall down? Don’t let the fence decide for you. Hop off before it’s too late, to give your rear a break, in the least. I swear, the grass is greener, more technically cushioned and gratifying on the other side. Just make the move, and no excuses!
Bring the IT classroom to the comfort of your own home! Sit in your easy chair and start your IT certification training and/or MCDBA training today. The rewards are plentiful.

As IT professionals continue to work in a very competitive industry it’s important to begin with a solid base to build one’s career upon. But it’s even more essential to prolong the life of one’s IT career. To accomplish this, there are a few tips, or shall we say ‘nuts and bolts,’ that are perfect to utilize in tightening and keeping your established IT status in tip-top career-driven shape.
Blueprint Your Career and Research:
Work well, but plan ahead. You have to lay out a blueprint as to where you currently are in your IT career, but also, make a layout for future plans, sites or paths. In terms of where you’d like to be - depending on personal IT career goals - research various trends in your field and best acclimate yourself into those spots.
And although trends are quite rampant in the IT work field, don’t get too caught up in them, as most are not long-lasting or credible, nor in line with keeping to blueprint plans. Many IT career pursuits and training programs are available and are quite advantageous, but be selective in your chase.
Make sure that you take relevant training courses and receive certifications that are worthwhile to you and your pursuits, especially keeping them paralleled with your career goals. Think long-term accomplishments, rather than ‘make your money and run’ shortcuts. Goals are weighted more than trends, always, as they deliver promised success. Keep this in mind.
Keep Level-Headed and Disciplined:
Again, keep away from quick fixes in the IT workplace. Making money fast is great, as we all know, but this approach doesn’t guarantee a solid IT career path. Say you gain certification in the newest and hottest IT offering with prior knowledge of a promising salary, yet you lack knowing that that particular IT job will die out in a matter of months. What then? Well, you’ve collected quite a bit of money in that time, but you then need to start fresh, since you selected a fad IT opportunity to fortune off of.
When working as an IT professional you must keep one thing in mind with certification, longevity. Select a particular area of IT interest and go with it, making certain your desired certification is not a short-term craze, but one with heightened potential allowing room for growth within your IT career.
Also, understand that IT certification and training is not the same as an IT career. Certification and training are completely separate, they’re more so used as a means to lay down your IT career foundation. From this point, after certification, you can build upward through skill sets and gained knowledge. The intricacies of molding your true career begins once experience and aptitude are attained. Practical experience especially, along with polished job performance displays your capabilities as an IT professional and is enough validation for any company.
O.K. Computer, What Else You Got?
Away from computer apprehension, the IT world also seeks a little bit more. Behind all those technicalities and computer savvy IT professionals, employers and companies are looking for well-rounded individuals, ones with more than technical computer skills.
As an IT professional, you should be able to communicate well, both through computers, but more importantly among co-workers and management. Have an organizational touch about you with leadership qualities that get noticed and talked about. Be able to speak your mind visually or through text, as having presentation and excellent written skills are excellent attributes to have.
All these non-required, yet beneficial qualities are what IT professionals must now have on top of refined technical or computer skill, at least if he or she are looking to have a secured career in the IT workforce.
Lay down a concrete foundation to sturdy your IT stance in the professional arena to build from the bottom up and reach new heights. Take the above ‘nuts and bolts’ tips to assure your IT career’s maintenance and longevity.
Curious about certification for an IT career? If so, check out IT certification training and MCDBA training as two fantastic options.

In today’s fast-paced and technically-driven world almost any type of job involves using computers. To be unfamiliar with current and evolving technological trends is to be in the doldrums and lagging behind others who are surging rapidly ahead in their careers. So, it only makes sense to become familiar, and even extremely knowledgeable about computers, whether ranging from basic to advanced knowhow. And it’s not like knowing about or working with computers is uninteresting. Rather, it’s quite exciting since it’s always constantly progressing.
So, why not hop on the computer train and start shoveling your own coal to fuel the ever-needy furnace that is the technological workforce? You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
There are a few steps to consider following if you would like to start working with computers:
- Fool Around and Inform Yourself:
Get your feet wet, especially if you’re not a computer person or if you have little to no prior computer knowledge. Play around with different softwares, programs and the Internet. The more familiar you are with computers when you pursue further education the better off you’ll be.
And if you’re in a state of complete confusion or you feel like a lost child, seek a “computer mentor,” someone very computer savvy who can transfer their knowledge your way.
On the other hand, if you’re already semi-familiar with computers - as I’m sure a large majority of readers of this article already are - continue what you’re doing. Refine your knowledge and skills. Research and update what you already know through articles online and printed literature. Absorb as much as you can.
- Get Certified, Get Ahead:
Certain technical companies that you might already be familiar with (Microsoft, Apple, Dell, Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard, etc.) are constantly seeking well-informed and professionally trained individuals to hire. Now, to get hired, you must have certification. Companies rely on paper proof, in the form of raw certification, to measure competency in prospective employees.
So, if you can prove you are indeed qualified and able to perform whatever technical task an employer is seeking in a possible employee, chances are you’ll get hired immediately. Otherwise, without proof of ability you won’t even receive a glance from any technical company’s Human Resources department.
- Got An IT Job? Great, Continue To Learn!
Perform well with your own tasks and work, but don’t sell yourself short. Seek other avenues to expand your knowledge, both within your place of employment and from outside, non-job sources.
While at work, if you’ve accomplished what was required of you, seek other projects, even if they’re outside of your department. Shadow a fellow employee and learn what they’re doing and how to do it. This shows initiative in wanting to know more and potential for growing within the company. By doing this you can gain promotions and better job opportunities, simply based off your expanded computer knowhow.
Outside of the office, you can opt to learn more, whether this knowledge is relevant to your current job or completely new to you. Take sit-down courses, sign up for seminars or download at-home courses you can take from the comfort of your own desk.
As you’re already aware, working with computers is unavoidable. It’s just up to you whether or not you choose to accept the current technological trends. If you do choose to hop on the computer train, be prepared to strap in tight and hold on. For the industry is ever-expanding and evolving at an accelerated pace. And it’s quite clear that knowing computers and their intricacies allows for a definite and quite successful career. So, what are you waiting for? Get on board while you still can.
Getting on the computer and IT path? Become truly successful and seek IT certification training or MCDBA training and it’s a guarantee you’ll be successful.

The current technologically-inclined workforce is expanding and improving at a tremendous rate. For IT workers, and even employers, the pace has quickened and keeping up with changes is a constant battle. This technological battleground is universal for all workforces. All jobs, blue-collar to white-collar, involve or require some form of computer and/or technological aptitude.
You can’t really go through life or working with a blank stare when it comes to current and upcoming technologies; you’ve got to be somewhat familiar, in the least. But, then again, being slightly acquainted isn’t all that advantageous either. It is full awareness and ability to learn and adapt, with any technical servicing, that are essential to getting on track and getting ahead with a solid IT career.
Knowledgeable, keen and willing individuals will be quite successful in the IT work world. But, to have a certain shoe-in and to get on top, you need credentials; and a snazzy resume or just sheer knowledge isn’t enough. You need papers, and proof! So, validate yourself
Credentials here in the professional IT sphere are known as IT ‘Certifications.’
What are IT Certifications?
Certifications are more or less accreditations you can attain through various testing to authenticate your knowledge within a specific IT realm, skill or function.
Are Certifications A Must?
Even if you are well-accustomed to certain software and technical programs, you must have certification to get an employer’s attention. Employers rely on certifications for many reasons, but mostly for factors of assurance toward hiring a prospective employee. And to gain this confidence technical or professional certification is relied on as a means to measure competency in prospective employees.
So, yes. Get certification!
Certifications are now recognized throughout the industry as the standard for validating IT knowledge and skill sets. They not only validate, but they assist individuals in displaying their proven level of expertise.
Certifications From An Employer’s Perspective:
IT managers will tell you upfront that certification is crucial in deciding if a prospective employee lands a job or if a current employee receives a promotion. Attained certifications will also result in a few perks including: a higher salary, a heightened marketability and enhanced understanding. And even if you’ve been working IT for a few years, get more certification; you’ll gain more respect from management and fellow colleagues.
One thing is certain, a never ending change is the only constant in the IT field. To compete, stay employed and succeed, certification is dire. The benefits are endless and you’ll learn nonstop, so, what’s to lose? If you’re considering the IT option, be bold and go for it. Getting certified and maintaining your skills with current technical innovations are the key to continued professional success in the IT arena.
Research attaining your IT certification training as well as your MCDBA training as it will certainly be worth your while.

For success on your CCNA 640-802 and CCENT exams, you need to understand how and why Frame Relay LMI messages operate. You need to know this for real-world networking as well, since Frame Relay is prevalent in today’s networks - and without LMI, you have no Frame Relay!
The Local Management Interface (LMI) messages are sent between the DCE, typically the service provider, and the DTE, the Cisco router. LMI Status messages serve as keepalives for the frame connection. If keepalives are not continually received by both the DCE and DTE, the frame connection will drop. The LMI also indicates the PVC status to the router, reflected as either active or inactive.
The LMI types must match on the DTE and DCE for the PVC to be established. There are three types of LMI:
Cisco (the default)
ansi
q933a
The LMI type can be changed with the frame lmi-type command. Before doing anything with the frame relay commands, though, we have to enable frame relay on the interface with the encapsulation frame-relay command. Remember, the default encapsulation type on a Cisco Serial interface is HDLC.
R1(config)#interface serial0
R1(config-if)#encapsulation ?
atm-dxi ATM-DXI encapsulation
frame-relay Frame Relay networks
hdlc Serial HDLC synchronous
lapb LAPB (X.25 Level 2)
ppp Point-to-Point protocol
smds Switched Megabit Data Service (SMDS)
x25 X.25
R1(config-if)#encapsulation frame-relay
R1(config-if)#frame-relay lmi-type ?
cisco
ansi
q933a
We can hardcode the LMI type as shown in that example, and there’s another way to get the LMI to match with the remote DCE. LMI Autosense has the router send out an LMI Status message for all three LMI types.
The router then waits for a response for one of those LMI types from the DCE. When the router sees the response to its LMI Autosense messages, the router will then send only the same LMI type it received from the DCE.
On rare occasions - such as your CCNA exam, perhaps
- the Frame LMI may not match. We’ll take a look at such a scenario in the next installment of my exclusive Cisco CCENT / CCNA 640-802 certification exam tutorial series!
