Important Printer Terminology

Understanding printer terminology helps one to search for, select and operate printers in a better and effective way. One of these important printer terms is DPI which stands for Dots per inch. It is a quantity used to define the resolution of printer images. The higher the DPI, the greater will be the details with which the image is displayed. The term used to measure the printing speed is known as PPM. PPM stands for pages per minute and defines the number of pages printed by a machine in one minute.

Another important term used to define the performance of a printer is bit depth. It defines the number of various color tones linked with a dot. A bit depth of 1 implies 2 colors, a depth of 8 implies 256 colors and that of 24 implies 16.7 million colors. Color balance is a term used to describe the print quality. It is a measure of an image color cast. Duty cycle is the number of printed pages a printer can produce as an output.

AIO and MFP stand for All in one and Multifunction Printer respectively. These terms refer to machines that are a combination of printer, copier and scanner. An inkjet printer terminology is CYMK which defines the inkjet colors. In CYMK, C stands for cyan, Y stands for yellow, M stands for magenta and K stands for black. A term used as an alternative for printer brand name is OEM ink cartridges or printers which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Different terms used to explain types of printing are duplex printing, 4×6 printing, 6 ink printing, 7 ink printing and 8 ink printing. Of these, duplex printing refers to two sided printing whereby the printer itself reverses the page after one of the sides has been printed. 4×6 printing produces photograph of snapshot size, while 6, 7 and 8 ink printing technologies employ multiple inks to produce high quality, clear and bright results.

Anti aliasing is an important technology whereby a printer applies mathematical formulae to improve the resolution of character edges.Letter Quality refers to a printer that is able to produce text similar to that produced by a type writer. Near letter quality refers to dot matrix printers which produce text almost similar to that produced by a letter quality printer.

Paper capacity indicates the maximum number of printer papers or other media a printer tray is able to contain. Print zone refers to the part of the sheet on which the printer is supposed to print.

Borderless printing is a terminology used to define a technique whereby photos are produced by a printer with no blank spaces at the edges of the page. Brightness refers to the lightness or darkness of the printed image. A pixel refers to one of the thousand dots of which a digital photograph is made of.

In the old days, a thermal paper roll was merely an expensive alternative to the standard bond paper that you put into your receipt printer. But the technology behind thermal paper has advanced enough that using this former alternative is now the most sensible choice. In many cases thermal paper is even less expensive than bond paper–plus it delivers better results!

The type of thermal paper you choose depends largely on the specifics of your business. The width, length, and grade of thermal paper varies widely depending on the manufacturer and the type of machine the paper is used for. The paper is impregnated with a solid-state mixture of a dye and a suitable matrix; a combination of a fluoran leuco dye and an octadecylphosphonic acid is an example. Data Loss and Data Recovery: An Overview

Data stored on computers can get lost in several ways. To recover from such a situation the main option would be to restore from backed up data.
Alternatively calling on the services of a specialist data recovery company. Reconstructing all the lost data manually is usually not a viable option.

Reconstruction will involve:

  • Locating the original documents or specifications,
  • Huge amounts of data entry, and
  • Serious disruption to the business during the reconstruction period
    • The cost of such an exercise can seem very expensive, but without it’s being done a company’s viability can be put at risk.

      This is the context in which data recovery becomes a significant issue. Before we look at data recovery, let us take a brief look at how data gets lost.

      How Does Data Get Lost?

      Data stored on computer media can get lost in different ways, including:

      • User actions such as deleting data unintentionally, carelessly, or even deliberately for malicious or financial gain
      • Loss of removable media such as CD/DVD on which valuable data were stored (see UK Revenue and Customs, DVLA, Banks and Building Societies etc ) /li>
      • Administration and other human errors leading to loss of valuable data (e.g leaving primary data on a laptop not backed up which can be at risk of theft.)
      • Power supply problems leading to system malfunctions that cause data damage
      • System crashes leading to incomplete sessions and loss of data
      • Hardware problems causing incorrect or incomplete write operations
      • Corrupted media or databases making recorded data unreadable
      • Natural disasters like fire, flood or earthquake destroying the computer facilities
      • Data loss caused by malicious external agents like viruses and hackers
      • Pilferage of physical media or equipment such as laptop computers

      Studies indicate that almost three quarters of data loss is caused by hardware failure and human errors. It is in these cases that data recovery becomes a viable option.

      Data recovery is not possible where the media storing the data has been lost and there are no backups available.

      Preventing Data Loss

      USER EDUCATION: Training your staff in various aspects of computer operations can minimize data losses, particularly losses caused through human errors, which are a major cause of data loss. Staff can be trained to take the necessary precautions, such as backing up, antivirus checking, working through firewalls, but there should always be someone in charge the security of data.

      BACKUP: The impact of data loss can be minimized through well-implemented data backup procedures. The qualification “well-implemented” is important. Often, data backup is done in a routine manner without checking whether a full data recovery is possible in case original data is lost.

      Data backup might not be up to date. Data in backup media can prove irrecoverable owing to improper backing up or media corruption. It is important to make regular reviews and tests of both back up procedures and backed up data to ensure that the data is indeed recoverable if it becomes necessary.

      Storing backed up data in a location away from the primary data location can help in such cases as a fire / flood or other natural disaster.

      ANTI VIRUS & FIREWALL SOFTWARE: Anti virus software, if kept up to date, can help guard against virus attacks. Firewalls can stop most hackers from hacking into your systems.

      REDUNDANT MEDIA AND WRITE OPERATIONS: Data is written to more than one media device or location so that if one of them fails, the other can be used to repair the damage.

      Data Recovery

      Where a proper backup system is in place, lost data can be recovered to a greater or lesser extent using the backups. The speed of such recovery will depend on the kind of backup media used. Where the backup media is online, such as in RAID systems, or Web-based third party facilities, data recovery can be quick.

      At the other extreme, where data is stored on magnetic tapes at locations away from the primary site, data recovery could be a time-consuming exercise and may need to be shipped or couriered to the main location.

      Where backups are not available or unsatisfactory, you have to depend on data recovery software or data recovery specialists. Data recovery software might be able to recover deleted files and repair corrupted directories. However, more serious data losses are likely to need the services of data recovery companies with expertise and specialized facilities, like Class 100 (Iso 5) Clean Rooms.

      Data recovery companies extract the raw image from the disk and might try different techniques such as file system recovery, replacing damaged hardware components with compatible healthy ones, and reprogramming the firmware. These are technically involved and often delicate procedures requiring considerations to dust and electrostatic discharge (esd) in order to recover as much of the data as possible.

      Conclusion

      Data loss can occur owing to numerous factors and is something that has to be planned against. Training your computer personnel, proper back up procedures and use of anti-virus and firewall software are some of the measures you can take to guard against data loss.

      If these measures are absent or prove inadequate, you may have to approach external data recovery specialists, with the expertise and facilities to recover lost data.

There are separate models of Xerox printers and copiers for home and office use. The 3124 machine is a good choice for a personal printer because of its large paper capacity and large print cartridges, which serve to prevent interruptions during printing operation. On premise systems stores and handles data in a local database, providing more security of data. On demand CRM systems are programmed for automatic nearly real-time data back-up, where as most on premise systems require manual data back up.

Features offered and update — Features of CRM systems vary considerably among both types, even the feature available from single software vary according to subscribing or purchasing plan. Both type of systems have some standard features and some added on which vary from vendor to vendor. The updating of on premise systems are much difficult, most times you have to purchase the update/add-on and have to install it manually. On demand CRM systems are updated frequently by CRM vendors usually for free of cost, and most times the users not even realizes that.

Open source and Customization. Here on demand systems clearly leading the way, many of them are open-source systems allowing companies to customize it completely or to build new modules or add-ons. Their customization is also much easier and requires not much technical knowledge.

Avery Label Sizes & Types

The two general categories of Avery labels are the printer labels and the copier labels. Avery printer labels are found in two broad types known as Avery inkjet labels and laser labels, each of which can be further divided into multiple types. The various types of Avery inkjet labels are clear labels, white labels, mini labels and quick dry white labels.

The clear labels are found in different sized varieties each containing different numbers of labels per sheet. The commonly available varieties contain 1, 8, 14, 16 or 21 labels on one page. As the number of labels per page increases, the size of each label subsequently decreases. One label per page offers the largest labels, each of which is 210mm x 297mm in dimensions. 8 labels per page have standard dimensions of 99.1mm x 67.7mm. Similarly, smaller ones having dimensions of 99.1mm x 34mm are available as 16 labels per page. The smallest clear labels manufactured by Avery are of the dimensions 63.5 mm x 38.1 mm and are found as 21 labels on each page.

The Avery labels are found in a large number of different sizes such as 199.6mm x 289.1mm found as 1 label per page, 199.6mm x 143.5mm found as 2 labels per page and 139mm x 99.1mm available as 4 labels per page. In addition, white labels are also found in the dimensions 99.1mm x 93.1mm as 6 labels per page and 99.1mm x 67.7mm as 8 labels per page. The 10, 12 and 14 labels per page are of the standard Avery dimensions 99.1mm x57.0mm, 63.5mm x72mm and 99.1mm x38.1mm respectively. Other commonly available sizes of Avery white labels are 99.1×34.0mm and 63.5×46.6mm which are sold as 16 and 18 labels per page respectively.

The mini labels are found in 4 different sizes, the largest of which is 45.7mm x 25.4mm in size, sold as 40 labels per page. Next in size are the labels with dimensions 38.1mm x 21.2 mm available as 65 labels per page. Next is the size 25.4mm x 10mm, which is found as 189 labels per page. The smallest mini labels are only 17.8mm x 10mm in size and are found as 270 labels per page. The quick dry white labels are also found in a variety of sizes and packs containing different numbers of sheets.

The laser labels by Avery are found in five types known as clear labels, heavy duty labels, removable labels, white labels and mini labels. Each of these is found in multiple sizes. Other types of labels are mailing labels, color printing labels, special use labels, filing labels and identification labels. The Avery copier labels are also found in multiple sizes ranging from 210mm x 297mm to 70mm x 30mm.

Worm.Win32.Netsky Or A Fake Anti-Spyware Program

I was expecting some nice gifts and not being threatened with worm.win32.netsky on Christmas day morning. When I turned my computer on windows security alert boxes kept popping up to say that my computer had been hacked into and had a virus and another warned that it had been infected by worm.win32.netsky. My Internet Explorer was constantly opening and trying to take me to spyware removal download sites.

There were 3 new icons on my desktop ‘privacy protector’, ‘Error Cleaner’ and ’spyware & malware protection’. I had definitely not downloaded them so I reasoned that they could only be part of the problem that I was having. They started scanning by themselves, one told me that I had 161 spyware problems and another 243. Worm.win32.netsky was at the top of both lists and lower down were references to credit card hacking. My desktop turned dark red and a warning bar appeared telling me to click on it to protect my computer.

At first I was worried then logic took over. My virus and spyware software, which comes with my broadband service, updated the day before and when I ran a check it came up with nothing. I had vaguely heard of worm.win32.netsky and did not think that it was so new that a virus scan would not pick up on it. I figured that the whole attack was to panic me into buying one of the products. I am stubborn and if I buy spyware protection it would not be through those methods.

I did a Google search for worm.win32.netsky and found a long list of sites. Most of the sites described it as part of the netsky family of email worms that comes to your computer as an email attachment. When you click on the attachment the worm activates then installs itself on your computer and propagates. It harvests email addresses stored on your computer and spreads further by sending itself to them. One or more spyware removal downloads were recommended, but I still did not believe that the computer was infected by anything more than bullying sales methods.

I finally found a forum where a member had described exactly the same thing happening to him. Apparently Worm.Win32.Netsky is a scam, fake malicious software called Smitfraud, an anti-spyware program trojan, engineered by Internet hackers. A fraudulent way to get you to buy spyware removal software. He was pointed in the direction of SmitFraudFix v2.274 and the fix worked for him. I downloaded it and used it and thought that it had worked.

The next day the warnings and desktop icons reappeared. I quickly ran Smitfraudfix again and then I restored my computer to 14 days before the problem appeared. So far so good, the fix and restore seem to have worked. SmitFraudFix v2.274 which apparently only works with Windows XP or 2000 was a free download so the whole thing cost me nothing but time and anxiety. Just to make sure I got a free download of Spyware Doctor from Google and ran it to make sure that my computer was clear and deleted cookies with it.

One of the sites that my IE insisted on going to was selling XP Antivirus. If you do a search for XP Antivirus you will find claims that it is a corrupt anti spyware application that will try to trick you into buying it by falsifying error reports. Do not even think about buying it. XP Antivirus will not remove spyware it will not do anything useful, just scam you out of money.

Where did the problem come from? I am not sure. I had not opened any email attachments for months and would only open attachments if I were expecting them. I downloaded some ebooks and software the day before but had not opened them at that point. I always check downloaded files with a virus scan before I unzip them anyway.

Another possibility is that I visited a dodgy site and the rogue anti spyware program leached onto my computer. In fact when I thought about my surfing the night before it is the most probable explanation. No I do not make a habit of visiting dodgy sites! I was checking my article directory stats and towards the top of a long list of incoming links was a domain that I did not recognize. Out of curiosity I clicked on the link and was taken to a porn site. I did not stick around long enough to see if or why there was a link to my directory, but I will have to do a search to see if any of the articles have links to that site and delete them if they have.

I recall that several years ago when I ran a magazine I checked a link from an advertisement that a subscriber had wanted me to publish. That was a porn site and a virus attacked my computer immediately afterwards. I got rid of the virus and needless to say I did not accept the ad. As I check the links with the articles submitted to my directory I cannot be as careful as I would like to be.

They say that curiosity killed the cat; well it only inconvenienced and annoyed this one. The whole thing is fraudulent and a scam. I am really glad that I did not get caught out but no doubt many others will. Fortunately I always do a search if I am unsure of anything or want to find out about something. The best and most honest answers or information usually comes from forums, not the sites with reviews and links to the products.

Of course worm.win32.netsky might really have been a worm from the netsky family then I really would have had a bigger problem to deal with. I thought that my broadband virus and spyware software would look after my computer but I will now look for something better. I really cannot understand the mentality of the malicious people who manufacture worms and viruses, or the scamsters who try to trick you out of your money.

Clean Room Data Recovery - What’s Its Significance?

What are clean rooms? Why is clean room data recovery important? We look at these issues first.

What Are Clean Rooms?

Clean rooms are rooms that have been designed to reduce the level of particulates in the air like dust and airborne microbes. Clean room construction employs filters extensively. Outside air is filtered to prevent dust entering the room. Filters and processes will be in place inside the room to remove internally generated contaminants during production and working areas are often further filtered locally such as laminar flow bench.

Staff would usually have to enter clean rooms through airlocks and wear protective gear while working inside the rooms.

There are different “classes” of clean rooms, with each class limiting permissible different numbers of particles per cubic meter, as well as the maximum sizes particles. Thus a Class 1 clean room is one where the number of particles should not exceed 1000 particles per cubic meter.

Clean rooms are used extensively in the pharmaceutical, semiconductor manufacturing and biotech industries. Data recovery centres typically use a Class 100 clean room that has an allowance of 100,000 particles per cubic meter (compared to 35 million particles per cubic meter in a normal room).

Why Use Clean Rooms for Data Recovery?

Clean rooms are used for data recovery to prevent dust, electro static discharges and such disturbances. These kinds of precautions become necessary because even microscopic dust particles can damage the image on the drive platters, and make data recovery difficult.

With each generation of disks, data is packed more and more densely on the disk platters. It is thus increasingly important that data recovery be attempted in exceptionally clean rooms.

Drive manufacturers usually specify that their product guarantee will become void if the drive is opened by anybody other than themselves, or their authorized agents. And typically, one of the conditions they impose on authorized agents is that the disks be opened in clean rooms meeting specified standards.

Thus clean rooms are necessary for data recovery on both performance and product warranty considerations.

Disk drives are opened only in clean rooms and kept there until the recovery is complete and the drive is closed. All devices are also protected against electro-static discharge, physical shocks, temperature fluctuations and electrical disturbances.

Staff wear special clothing while working in the rooms and particle density is constantly monitored using particle counters. A typical objective of clean room data recovery centers is to maintain Class 10 conditions during production.

Data storage media are getting packed with data more and more densely with each new generation of drives. It is thus extremely important to attempt data recovery in exceptionally dust free rooms.

These days, clean room data recovery uses Class 100 clean rooms where the number of particles is reduced by some 350 times compared to normally prevailing particle density.

Clean room data recovery centers actually aim to achieve even higher levels of dust free conditions during production operations. Even minute specks of dust on the drive platters can damage the image on the media, and make data recovery even more difficult, if not impossible.

Top Xerox Printer & Copiers for Small Offices

Xerox offers multiple printer models designed in particular for use in small offices. These models differ in their performance and capacity from ordinary personal printers. Office printers have excessively high printing speeds, enormously large paper capacity and usually high prices. There are a large number of Xerox models which have been considered suitable for office use. Some of these have won awards for their incomparable performance, and can thus be regarded as the best ones for office use. Such color printers are Phaser 6130, Phaser 6180, Phaser 8560, Phaser 8860, Phaser 6360, Phaser 7400 and Phaser 7760.

Of these, 6130 is a laser printer suitable for small and frequent printing jobs. It is designed for a group of 7 users. It has a color printing speed of 12 ppm and a paper capacity of 251 sheets. Phaser 6180 is also a laser printer but it can be used by a workgroup of 10 users with a printing speed of 20 ppm and a 400 sheets paper capacity. Phaser 8560 and Phaser 8860 are solid ink printers ideally suitable for daily printing tasks. They can be used by a workgroup of 20 users and possess a high printing speed of 30 ppm. Xerox Phaser 6350 is a laser printer meant for lengthy printing jobs. It is designed for a workgroup of 30 users and has a very high printing speed of 42 ppm. Phaser 7760 is a laser printer used for printing graphics at a speed of 35 ppm.

In spite of the printers, Xerox offers a wide range of copiers as well, some of which are specially designed for office use. The quality, speed and large paper capacity of the machine is worth the price. They possess multiple paper trays and high duty cycles. The most important of these are Xerox CopyCentre C20, CopyCentre C118, CopyCentre C123/C128, digital BookMark Copier and Xerox WorkCentre Pro 580.

Each of these models differs from others in its features and specifications. The CopyCentre C20 is meant for little digital copying tasks. It copies at a speed of 22 ppm and possess a paper capacity of 1,200 sheets. C118 is made for frequent small or medium copying tasks. It works at a speed of 18 ppm and has a paper capacity of 1,850 sheets. CopyCentre C123/C128 performs both copy and fax operations and is designed for very frequent small and medium copying tasks.

Digital BookMark Copier performs digital copying at a speed of 30 ppm and has an extra large paper capacity of 4,050 sheets. WorkCentre 5030/5050 is basically a copier designed for medium sized jobs but it can perform optional functions of printing, scanning, fax and Email as well. These multiple functions render it very useful for small offices.
